Michael Goodine Completes VTest Academic English

We're pleased to share that Michael Goodine, founder of TOEFL Resources and a well-known expert in English language proficiency testing, has now completed a number of Burlington VTest assessments. Following his earlier review of VTest General English, Michael recently took the VTest Academic English assessment, offering further insight into the quality and design of the VTest testing experience.
Having already praised the user experience of the VTest General English assessment, Michael noted that the Academic test maintained the same high standard. He once again highlighted the platform's intuitive interface, commenting that well-designed testing environments remain surprisingly uncommon in the language assessment industry.
One of the features that impressed him most was the adaptive nature of the assessment. As his performance placed him at the highest proficiency levels, he was presented with increasingly demanding academic reading passages and listening tasks. He observed that the Reading section required genuine comprehension rather than simple scanning techniques, with lengthy academic texts and questions that encouraged candidates to fully understand the material before answering. Likewise, the Listening section featured lectures, conversations, and interview-style recordings that he described as comparable in difficulty to the previous TOEFL format.
Across both the General and Academic English assessments, Michael consistently recognised VTest's emphasis on measuring practical language ability. Rather than relying on straightforward recall questions, he noted that the assessments regularly required candidates to demonstrate inferencing skills, mental paraphrasing, and pragmatic understanding of English-abilities that are essential for successful communication in both academic and real-world contexts.
Michael also commented on the adaptive design of the Speaking and Writing sections. Initial placement activities help determine the difficulty level of the remaining tasks, creating an assessment experience that is tailored to each candidate's level of proficiency. Among the speaking activities, he particularly appreciated VTest's approach to picture description, where candidates first describe the image before responding to a follow-up question that builds naturally on the same topic. He described this implementation as an engaging and effective way to assess spoken communication.
In his earlier review of VTest General English, Michael had similarly praised the adaptive testing model across all four language skills. He highlighted the progression from everyday conversations and practical reading materials to increasingly complex language tasks, while also recognising the assessment's ability to evaluate higher-order language skills such as inference and contextual understanding. He found the Writing and Speaking tasks to be thoughtfully structured and noted that the overall assessment reflects modern approaches to English language testing.
